Alternator Replacement in LA Costs $500 to $900 in 2026

Most alternator replacements cost $500 to $900, parts and labor together. Seven of the nine full alternator jobs our parent company, Supercanic, billed and got paid for from October 2025 to October 2026 landed in that range. The middle bill was $790. National guides run higher, up to $1,088.

Key points

  • Seven of nine paid full alternator jobs ran $500 to $900, with a middle bill of $790
  • Alternator parts on our quotes ran $85 to $606, and 10 of 13 sat between $160 and $414
  • Most of our alternator labor lines were 1.5 hours, which is $225 at $150 an hour
  • At the $271.10 California average rate AAA lists, the same 1.5 hours is $407
  • RepairPal lists $809 to $1,088 nationally, and its parts figure alone is $613 to $800
  • Test the battery and the charging output first. A tired battery fakes a bad alternator

$500 to $900. That is where seven of the nine full alternator jobs on our parent company's books landed. Part, labor and the small lines all in.

Those bills come from Supercanic paid final invoices dated October 30, 2025 to October 9, 2026. Nineteen paid invoices touched an alternator. We kept the nine where we supplied the part and billed the whole job. We left out bills under $300, which can't cover a part plus the labor, so they were install only work or a follow up visit. We also left out a labor only diagnosis, a job where the owner brought the part, and a job bundled with a fuse box harness. Figures are before tax. Most jobs were mobile, and most were in the Inland Empire, not the South Bay. Treat them as a floor for LA, not a quote.

What an Alternator Replacement Costs in LA

An alternator job is a part plus about an hour and a half of work on most cars. The part is usually the bigger half of the bill. That flips the starter job, where labor can win.

MeasurePaid Bill
Seven of nine full jobs$500 to $900
Middle bill$790
Lowest and highest$500 and $2,737
Full paid jobs counted9
Bills with no part on them$100 to $250

Two bills sat above $900. A 2019 Mercedes job came to $1,447 across two invoices. A 2018 Dodge Journey bill hit $2,737. That one has no line detail, so we can't say what else went in.

Outside numbers run higher. RepairPal puts the average at $809 to $1,088, with $196 to $288 for labor and $613 to $800 for parts (RepairPal). Kelley Blue Book lists $747 to $842 (Kelley Blue Book). Synchrony's guide quotes $700 to $1,000 (Synchrony).

Where the Money Goes

Two of our paid alternator bills were itemized line by line. They show the split better than any average.

Line2012 Honda CR-V2018 Ram 1500, 3.6L V6
Remanufactured alternator$303.60$605.99
Alternator labor1.5 hours, $225.001.5 hours, $187.50
Serpentine belt, part$50.75$37.99
Belt labornone0.5 hours, $62.50
Paid total$579.35$893.98

The Ram was billed at an older $125 rate. Both owners got a new belt with the alternator. The belt is off anyway, so it adds little labor.

Now compare the CR-V. RepairPal lists a Honda CR-V alternator job at $1,093 to $1,439 (RepairPal). Our paid CR-V bill was $579.35, belt included. Most of that gap is the part.

  • The part. We pulled every alternator part line on our quotes and bills from August to October 2026. There were 13, and 11 were marked remanufactured. They ran $85 to $606, and 10 of 13 sat between $160 and $414.
  • The labor. Most of our alternator labor lines were 1.5 hours. The range was 1 to 2 hours.
  • The belt. $38 to $51 for the part on our two itemized bills.
  • A test line. Some of our quotes add half an hour to test the charging system before the part is bought. That half hour can save you the whole job.

How Labor Rates Change the Bill

Alternator mounted low on a Nissan four cylinder engine, seen from below next to the engine mount and an A/C line
On many cars the alternator comes out from below

An alternator bolts to the front of the engine and rides on the serpentine belt. On some cars it sits right on top. On others it hides low, behind a mount or an A/C line.

Then the hourly rate multiplies it. AAA lists California's average labor rate at $271.10 an hour (AAA, Average Mechanic Labor Rate by State, 2026). The hours stack up like this at that rate and at ours.

Labor HoursAt $150 an Hour (Ours)At $271.10 (California Average)
1 hour, easy reach$150$271
1.5 hours, most of our jobs$225$407
2 hours$300$542
3 hours, buried alternator$450$813

Add a $160 to $414 part and most cars land at $400 to $900. Ask for the hours and the part type on the quote, not just the total.

Wrong Turns

Most alternator price advice trips on three things.

  1. Buying an alternator for a battery problem. A weak battery dims the lights and cranks slow, a lot like a failing alternator. Synchrony's guide says to have the charging system inspected so the diagnosis is confirmed. A battery and charging test takes minutes. Skip it and you can buy a $400 part you didn't need.
  2. Treating a parts average as your part. RepairPal's parts figure is $613 to $800. Ten of the 13 alternators on our quotes cost $160 to $414. Ask what grade of part is on your quote.
  3. Skipping the belt. The belt comes off for the job. A new one added $38 to $51 in parts on our itemized bills. A worn belt left on can squeal or snap later.

One more. Bringing your own alternator cuts the bill. Bills on our books with no part on them ran $100 to $250. But if that part is bad out of the box, you pay the labor twice.

Signs the Alternator Is Going

Synchrony lists these warning signs. It says most alternators last seven to 10 years, or about 100,000 to 150,000 miles (Synchrony).

  • Dim or flickering lights. Headlights or dash lights that fade, mostly at idle.
  • The battery light. It means the charging system is not keeping up.
  • Hard starts or stalling. The battery runs down because nothing is charging it.
  • Whining or grinding. A noise from the front of the engine that rises with the revs.
  • Electric parts acting up. Slow windows, a radio that cuts out, power seats that lag.
  • A burning smell. Hot wiring or a slipping belt. Get it checked soon.

Before You Pay for an Alternator in California

State law gives you a few rights on any repair. Use them on an alternator job (BAR, Maintenance and Repairs).

  • Get an estimate. The shop has to give you one for parts and labor before the work starts.
  • OK it first. Work starts only after you approve it, in writing, by phone or by text.
  • Ask for the old alternator back. You have the right to your replaced parts. Ask before you approve the job.
  • Read the part line. The final invoice has to say if a part is used, reconditioned or rebuilt. Most alternators we quote are remanufactured, and the bill should say so.
  • Keep the invoice. Ask about the parts warranty and get the terms on paper.

Most alternators can be swapped in a driveway with hand tools. Our battery, starter and alternator service tests all three before we replace one. If the test points to the battery, see what a car battery costs in LA. If it cranks but won't catch, read what a starter replacement costs.

The Questions That Keep Coming

What is a fair price to replace an alternator?

About $500 to $900 installed is fair for most cars in LA. Seven of the nine full alternator jobs our parent company billed and got paid for from October 2025 to October 2026 landed there. The middle bill was $790.

How much is labor to replace an alternator?

About 1.5 hours on most cars, with a range of 1 to 2 hours on our quotes. At $150 an hour that is $150 to $300. At the $271.10 California average rate AAA lists, 1.5 hours is $407.

Is fixing an alternator a big job?

On most cars, no. It is about an hour and a half with hand tools. The belt comes off, the alternator unbolts, and the new one goes in. A low or buried alternator takes longer.

Can you still drive a car with a bad alternator?

Only a short way. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs on the battery until it goes flat. Then it dies, often in traffic. Get it to a safe spot, or have it fixed where it sits.

Is it worth fixing the alternator?

Usually, yes. A $500 to $900 repair is small next to the value of most running cars. On a car worth less than the repair, get a firm quote first and decide with the number in hand.

How long does an alternator last?

Most last seven to 10 years, or about 100,000 to 150,000 miles, according to Synchrony.
