Key points
- The typical paid battery job ran $310, with the middle half at $200 to $381 across 17 jobs
- Ten of the 17 bills landed between $290 and $470
- California adds a $2 battery fee to every new lead acid battery, shown as its own line
- No old battery to hand back? You pay a core deposit, refunded if you return one within 45 days
- In the hottest parts of the country, AAA data puts battery life under 41 months
$310. That was the typical bill to put a new battery in a car across 17 paid jobs on our parent company's books. Battery, labor and the small lines all in.
Those numbers come from Supercanic paid final invoices dated November 20, 2025 to October 11, 2026. We kept every paid job that was a battery swap and nothing else. We left out jump starts, no start diagnosis, alternator jobs, starter jobs and hybrid packs. The figures are before tax. Most of those jobs were mobile, and most were in the Inland Empire, not the South Bay. Use them as a solid floor for LA, not a quote.
What a Battery Swap Costs in LA
A battery job is a part plus about an hour or less of work. The part is most of the bill. The spread comes from the battery itself.
| Measure | Paid Bill |
|---|---|
| Typical bill (median) | $310 |
| Middle half of jobs | $200 to $381 |
| Ten of 17 jobs | $290 to $470 |
| Lowest and highest | $75 and $537 |
| Paid jobs counted | 17 |
Two bills came in under $130. The top three ran $470 to $537. Ask which battery you are getting, because that part sets where you land.
Outside numbers sit close. Walser, a dealer group, puts a battery replacement at $120 to $300, and says that usually covers the battery, the install, a test and disposal of the old one (Walser, March 4, 2026). Hyperion Auto Repair, an LA shop, puts LA at $150 to $350 total. It lists an AGM battery alone at $200 to $400 or more (Hyperion Auto Repair). That AGM figure plus labor already tops its own $350 ceiling. So read that total as a regular battery price.
What Is on the Bill
One of our October 2026 battery invoices was itemized. It shows how the money splits.
- The battery. $263.47 on that bill. This is the line that moves the most.
- Labor. $150 on that bill. Supercanic bills $150 an hour, so that bill was one hour of work.
- Small lines. That job had a $56 add on line. Ask what any line like that covers before you OK it.
- The state fee. California charges $2 on every new lead acid battery bought since April 1, 2022 (CDTFA, Special Taxes and Fees Rates). The shop has to show it as its own line, and it is not taxed.
- The core deposit. If you don't hand over your old battery, the seller charges a deposit. It's refunded if you bring a used battery back within 45 days (BAR, Lead Acid Battery Recycling Program).
Hand the old battery over at the swap and there is no deposit to pay.
How Long a Battery Lasts in South Bay Heat
Heat is what wears a battery down. Cold just finds the weak one.
AAA data shows batteries last 58 months or more in the far north of the country. In the most southern regions it's less than 41 months (Consumer Reports, Jeff S. Bartlett, May 4, 2019). Consumer Reports' battery tester says to load test a battery every year once it's 2 years old in a warm climate.
So a battery bought three summers ago is on borrowed time in LA. Get it tested before it strands you. Our post on why summer heat kills car batteries covers the signs.

A test matters for a second reason. A dead battery is not always a bad battery. A weak alternator or a drain can kill a good one. We had a job on the books in September 2026 where batteries had already been replaced and the car still would not start. The bill was a starter. Test first, then buy.
Wrong Turns
Most battery price advice online trips on three things.
- Quoting the part, not the job. A battery on a shelf and a battery in your car are two prices. Ask for the installed total.
- Buying a battery to fix a no start. If the alternator or starter is the problem, the new battery dies too. A charging test takes minutes.
- Ignoring the age. In heat like ours, a battery can look fine in October and quit in the first hot week. Age plus a weak test result is reason enough to swap it.
One more. A cheap price that skips the test or the disposal is not cheaper. You pay for the test later, or the core deposit now.
Before You Pay for a Battery in California
State law gives you a few rights on any repair. Use them on a battery job too (BAR, Maintenance and Repairs).
- Get an estimate. The shop has to give you an estimate for parts and labor before the work.
- OK it first. Work starts only after you approve it, in writing, by phone or by text.
- Check the final invoice. It has to list each part and the labor, and show the shop's license number.
- Look for the $2 fee line. It should be there on a new lead acid battery. A big unnamed fee is a question to ask.
- Ask about the warranty. Get the terms on paper and keep the invoice.
- Ask what type it is. Regular flooded or AGM. Match what your car came with.

A battery swap is one of the easiest jobs to do at the curb. Our battery, starter and alternator service page covers what we bring. If the car won't start and you're not sure why, see what a car diagnostic costs in LA.
The Questions That Keep Coming
How much should it cost to get a car battery replaced?
About $310 installed is typical. Across 17 paid battery jobs our parent company invoiced from November 2025 to October 2026, the middle half ran $200 to $381. National guides land a bit lower, around $120 to $350.
Is $200 expensive for a car battery?
No. $200 installed is at the low end of normal. It was the bottom of the middle half on our paid bills. For the part alone, $200 is about what a regular battery costs, and an AGM battery costs more.
Is $500 too much for a car battery?
It is high, but not unheard of. Our top paid battery bills ran $450 to $537 installed. Ask for the battery type and the part price on its own line before you agree.
How long does a car battery last in Los Angeles?
Plan on about three years in a hot climate. AAA data puts battery life under 41 months in the most southern parts of the country. Have it load tested every year once it is 2 years old.
What is the California battery fee?
It is $2 on each new lead acid battery bought since April 1, 2022. The seller lists it as its own line on the invoice, and it is not taxed.
Can a mobile mechanic replace my battery at home?
Yes. A battery swap needs hand tools and a test meter, not a lift. It is one of the most common jobs done at the curb.
VIPCANIC swaps batteries at the curb in Hawthorne, Torrance and the rest of the South Bay, 24 hours a day. (310) 340-6775.
