How to tell bearing from tire noise
Both hum, but a bearing's pitch changes when you load it — swerve gently and the hum gets louder or quieter as weight shifts onto and off that corner. Tire noise stays constant. A worn bearing left alone gets hot, eats the hub, and in the worst case lets the wheel wobble; caught early it is a straightforward one-corner repair.
Quick tips
- Louder when steering slightly right = usually the left bearing, and vice versa
- Play you can feel rocking the wheel top-to-bottom means stop driving on it
