A rhythmic click-click-click through a parking-lot turn is one of the most recognizable failure sounds a car makes.

It started with a torn boot

CV joints live packed in grease behind a rubber boot. The boot tears, the grease slings out, road grit gets in, and months later the joint clicks under load in turns. Caught at the torn-boot stage it is an inexpensive reboot; caught at the clicking stage it is an axle. Caught never, it lets go entirely — usually mid-intersection.
